I have been eyeing buying a juicer for quite some time, but held off due to concerns on price and messiness. Long story short, enter the Breville Compact Juicer. While not cheap, at $99 it’s far below the standard multi-hundred dollar juicer pricing, and it works and cleans up like a charm.
I’m tempted to say this purchase has been life changing, but I’ll stick with something factual: this has led to a preponderance of juices in my house, starting, with the quest for the perfect green juice. And by perfect, I mean one that leaves me feeling like the pinnacle of health after drinking it, but is actually enjoyable to drink. Oh, and of course, doesn’t require too many esoteric ingredients so that it’s manageable to drink and make somewhat daily. And drink somewhat daily do I ever. Make the jump to juicer life with me, and enjoy!
Ingredients:
Serving Size: 20 fluid ounces – serves 2
Total Time: 10 minutes – 5 to prep & 5 to make
- 2 inch piece of fresh ginger, peeled*
- 1 whole cucumber, peeled**
- 1 medium Granny Smith Apple, de-cored***
- 5 ribs of celery
- 1 medium lemon, peeled and cut in fourths****
Directions:
- Prep first! Peel your ginger, cucumber, and lemon. Cut your apple away from the core. Wash your celery well (any dirt you miss is going in that juice!).
- Feed your ingredients one by one into your juicer. Enjoy!
Notes:
* On the ginger: I am a ginger fanatic so there is a chance you may want a slightly less zesty juice than I do. If you’re unsure, start with a one inch piece, taste the juice, and add the other inch if you’d like more of a kick.
** On peeling: If you don’t have a veggie peeler, use the back of a spoon! It works just as well.
*** I choose Granny Smith for its tartness and low sugar content. You could customize with a Fuji, for example, if you want a bit more sweetness.
****While you could use a peeler for this, I find it easier to just cut away the skin using a knife.
What am I listening to as I make this?
What can I learn while I make this? The proper terminology for celery. I put this in the category of superfluous but fun trivia facts. What I would call a “stalk” of celery (i.e. the thing that you would cut up into pieces for a snack, or feed one by one into a juicer) is actually called a “rib” of celery. The “stalk” is the entire bunch of celery. The more you know!
