Being extra has gotten a bad rap over the years, but for argument’s sake, I think there’s a time and a place for it. Specifically, when it requires very little effort and yields high future rewards. Like these make ahead frozen orange slice ice cubes. Make them, freeze them, and reap the rewards when they transform any future drink into something a bit extra (water, cocktails and mocktails alike!).
And, since the theme for this one is extra, I’ve given you a 3:1 recipe so that you have options for just how over-the-top you want to take it.
Ingredients:
(Per 6 large ice cubes)
- 1 large cube ice tray*
- 1 medium orange
- Water (duh!)
Directions:
(Total time: 10 minutes of prep, 4-5 hrs of freezing)
- Wash and dry your orange. Cut it in half, then slice into thin circles (target 1/4 – 18th of an inch).
- Then you have options!
- To make a full flower: You’ll need 3 full circle slices per ice cube flower. Gently “taco” each orange circle, and place in ice tray, forming flower.
- To make a flower with a bud: You’ll need 2 full circle slices (outside) and 3 half circle slices (inside bud) per ice cube flower. Gently “taco” two circles and place in ice tray as outside petals. Follow up by “taco-ing” two three half slices to form the inner bud.
- To simply make cute orange slices: Slice circles in half. Drop one half-circle slice per ice cube.
- Fill with water to rim, then put in freezer until frozen. This should take roughly 4-5 hours, but will depend on your freezer (and how often you impatiently open it to check!).
Notes:
*Mine is a silicone mold that makes six, 2-inch ice cubes.
You could also do this with lemon slices, cucumber slices, etc.- the possibilities are endless and your drinks won’t ever be the same!

What drinks should I drop these into? Don’t worry! Check out these ideas below:
